Beginning from his childhood and his experience as a student in a multi-grade classroom in a small mountain village, the interview traces the personal and professional history of Germano Dionisi, a retired elementary school teacher and educator from the Valle D’Aosta, who, since the 1970s, combined his profession as teacher with his political passion and with the dream of transforming society. Crucial in this sense was his encounter with the Educational Cooperation Movement (MCE), with Mario Lodi and many other capable and charismatic “masters”, but also with Francesco De Bartolomeis and his artistic workshops at the University of Turin. In the text, the life story is intertwined with the history of the Italian school and, in particular, the Aosta Valley school, for about fifty years: from the delegated decrees, to the reforms for school inclusion, to the fundamental role of the IRRSAE (Regional Institute for Educational Research and Experimentation) in the in-service training of teachers and in didactic innovation in Italy. Germano Dionisi, having played, since the 90s, the role of trainer within this institute, also has the opportunity to tell about two important experiments conducted in his Region. The interview is, therefore, an engaging and emotional testimony on a fundamental period of italian school but also allows us to critically reflect on the changes that have occurred and on the current situation.
