Smettere di essere cavalieri: gli ex equite Romano

By analyzing the interpretation of an abbreviation employed in the inscription on the funerary monument dedicated to L. Magius Pius, the article deals with the expression «ex equite Romano », known in particular from epigraphic sources. In contrast with the thesis argued by the majority of scholars, this paper argues that this expression describes an individual who has left the ordo equester, due to reasons that are not always traceable.

Analizzando l’interpretazione di un’abbreviazione utilizzata nell’iscrizione incisa sul monumento funerario di L. Magius Pius, l’articolo riesamina l’espressione «ex equite Romano», nota soprattutto da fonti epigrafiche. A differenza di quanto sostenuto dalla maggior parte degli studiosi, è possibile dimostrare che questa espressione definisce qualcuno che per ragioni non sempre determinabili è uscito dall’ordo equester.
