Through a historical and philological study of papyrological and epigraphical sources, this article clarifies the exact meaning of an obscure Greek expression used in two documents issued by the Prefect of Egypt during the reign of the Emperor Pius. The study provides an example of the impact of the Roman administration on the inhabitants of the provinces.
