The paper deals with the historical theme of military discharge proce- dures for legionaries and auxiliaries in the early Roman Empire: what offi- cium was responsible for these procedures? What documents can be defined as discharge certificates? Who promulgated the imperial constitutions for the auxiliary troops? By analyzing all of the known documents (i.e. epistulae, edicta, military diplomas, tabulae honestae missionis), and especially those coming from Egypt, this paper argues that military discharge procedures could be effected by either provincial governors or by the officium ab epis- tulis, and that this officium was the only one responsible for the issuing of imperial constitutions for the auxiliaries.

Abstract
The paper deals with the historical theme of military discharge proce- dures for legionaries and auxiliaries in the early Roman Empire: what offi- cium was responsible for these procedures? What documents can be defined as discharge certificates? Who promulgated the imperial constitutions for the auxiliary troops? By analyzing all of the known documents (i.e. epistulae, edicta, military diplomas, tabulae honestae missionis), and especially those coming from Egypt, this paper argues that military discharge procedures could be effected by either provincial governors or by the officium ab epis- tulis, and that this officium was the only one responsible for the issuing of imperial constitutions for the auxiliaries.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
