The recent enlargement of the BRICS group to five new member states raises questions about its future dynamics, especially from a domestic point of view. In fact, with the entry of the new members, the BRICS has finally secured itself the representation of the Middle East and the Islamic world, assuming a growing planetary dimension. However, it is also true that the enlargement adds a high degree of complexity and tensions to the group’s internal decision-making processes, which might force the BRICS to rethink its traditional consensus-based working methods and its typical informal structure

Abstract

The recent enlargement of the BRICS group to five new member states raises questions about its future dynamics, especially from a domestic point of view. In fact, with the entry of the new members, the BRICS has finally secured itself the representation of the Middle East and the Islamic world, assuming a growing planetary dimension. However, it is also true that the enlargement adds a high degree of complexity and tensions to the group’s internal decision-making processes, which might force the BRICS to rethink its traditional consensus-based working methods and its typical informal structure
