The essay reconstructs the history of the modern founding of the cemetery of Santa Maria di Gesù, starting with what is believed to be the first chapel after the Bourbon sanitary law of 1817 and continuing with the hypothesis that the subsequent settlements were of upper-class families and the new nobility and only later of the great aristocracy of the feud. An in-depth study is devoted to the Florio mausoleum, itself topical for understanding the role entrusted to the new cemetery.

L'articolo ricostruisce la storia della fondazione moderna del cimitero di Santa Maria di Gesù, a partire da quello che si ritiene la prima cappella dopo la legge sanitaria borbonica del 1817 e proseguendo con l'ipotesi che i successivi insediamenti fossero di famiglie altoborghese e di piccola e nuova nobilità e solo dopo della grande aristocrazia del feudo. Un approfondimento è dedicato al mausoleo dei Florio, esso stesso topico per la comprensione del ruolo affidato al nuovo camposanto.
