Abstract

The Roccavaldina Castle is a building rich in stratifications that are still legible. The rectangular courtyard layout is the result of an extension and transformation of a pre-existing nucleus created as the ‘fortified’ residence of the Valdina family, the new feudal lords and barons of Rocca from 1509, perhaps incorporating previous structures. The palace has been the object of attention and few studies that have attempted to reconstruct its history and construction events, formulating hypotheses and attributions on the architects of the modern age project and on the possible phases of the building sites that followed one another over time, but which cannot be proven due to the lack of certain sources and documentary evidence. The pre-eminent use as a prestigious aristocratic residence in the feud characterises the reconfiguration works implemented perhaps at the end of the 16th century or the beginning of the following. The affair still remains partly problematic and to be deciphered, and has many unresolved aspects. Starting from the verification and precise investigation of the archive documents that have been found or unpublished - although there are no direct documents relating to the construction -, from a careful ‘rereading’ and analysis of the sources and material remains, an attempt can be made to retrace the building's vicissitudes; the framework of the interventions can also be integrated and reconstructed with greater precision in the interweaving with the patrons who promoted and conditioned its history, growth and transformations for a long time. Indeed, it is the individual patrons, the personal stories, the success, the role, the taste of the protagonists of the family, who took turns in the feudal residence, that give meaning to the construction and the architectural results.
