The relationship between urban and theatrical space has played a social and political role within the polis since antiquity, constituting a stage for real life as much as for dramatic performances. While the city is the stage of everyday life, where the community becomes an active participant in the performance, the peripheral landscapes, dilations of the territory with respect to the denser urban cores, are configured as theatrical backdrops crystallised into sets on which the passage of time is the main actor. These areas, which compared to the urban centres see the anthropic presence thinning out, acquire the role of filter zones, where nature and the built environment coexist in a perfectly balanced system, but at the same time in continuous transformation: the action of time on nature becomes a tool for redesigning the landscape. It is necessary to specify that the concept of landscape cannot simply be enclosed in a definition that sees Nature and Artifice in opposition: we want to highlight the environmental dimension that constitutes it, finding the need to broaden the concept of heritage, not having to categorise separately what is artificial heritage from what is natural heritage, but recognising the coexistence of these parts that are closely dependent on each other. In marginal scenarios in which the anthropic work is lacking, nature, moved by the action of time, thus becomes a transversal tool to be used as a guide in the design choices to re-inhabit places, from interior architecture to landscape design. Are there therefore different variables to be able to decline the ‘nature tool' for design purposes in relation to the scale on which one is going to act? Is the contribution that the inter-scalar intervention of nature has in the domain of architecture the same among the different sub-disciplines, or can it be united by overall rules?
