Per una ricognizione sulle fonderie artistiche di Palermo tra prima e seconda metà del XIX secolo

Between the first and second halves of the nineteenth century, a number of artistic foundries occupied a prominent place in Palermo, engaged in productions also related to residential and urban furnishings and domestic utensils. Another peculiar aspect was the metal alloy beds that characterized residential furniture on the English model. The research reviewed the main studies on local foundries and metallurgy, which it delved into through period, printed and archival sources. The goal was to draw a comprehensive review of the realities that emerged in the 19th century in Palermo by identifying their type of production. In addition to unpublished documentation, including graphics on the Gallo Foundry, the research allowed for the first time to exclude the production of bronze sculptures from the activity of the Oretea Foundry and highlighted the central role in this field of the Rutelli Artistic Foundry.

Tra prima e seconda metà dell’Ottocento a Palermo occupavano un posto di rilievo numerose fonderie artistiche, impegnate in produzioni legate anche all’arredo residenziale, urbano e alla utensileria domestica. Un altro aspetto peculiare fu quello dei letti in lega metallica che caratterizzarono gli arredi residenziali sul modello inglese. La ricerca ha passato in esame i principali studi sulle fonderie e metallurgie locali che ha approfondito tramite fonti d’epoca, a stampa e archivistiche. L’obiettivo è stato tracciare un’esauriente rassegna sulle realtà emerse nel XIX secolo a Palermo, identificandone il tipo di produzione. Oltre alla documentazione inedita, anche grafica sulla Fonderia Gallo, la ricerca ha consentito per la prima volta di escludere la produzione di sculture in bronzo dall’attività della Fonderia Oretea e ha posto in evidenza il ruolo centrale in questo campo e solitario nel panorama palermitano della Fonderia Artistica Rutelli.
