The article explores the iconographic genesis of the sculpture of Judith (1717-1718), created by Giacomo Serpotta in the presbytery of the Oratory of Santa Cita in Palermo. It is suggested that the prototype of Serpotta's figure should be identified in a work by Guido Reni depicting precisely the same biblical heroine. Specifically, the iconographic reference would find a plausible mediation in a 1638 engraving by the French artist Sébastien Vouillemont, derived from a copy of Reni's original. The influence of other suggestions related to the local artistic context is also considered.
