Inside of the third section of the Book of Amos, generally called “Oracles against Israel”, the passage 6:1-7 is normally interpreted as an invective against luxury and richness of the people of Samaria Kingdom in the first half of the 7th century B.C. By means of a careful textual analysis, and with a special reference to the semantic parallels to other oracles (2:7; 3:15; 5:18-20; 5:21-27), we can notice that Am 6:1-7 is not only a “social” invective, but also and above all an invective against foreign Canaanite cults, that risked to contaminate yahwistic cult and the people at that time, because of the strong popular impact of religion.
