Since its construction in the 1720s in the northeast corner of the central square of the hexagonal city, the Domus Iuratoria of Grammichele has constituted an element of “variation” of the original design idea of the city’s founder and creator, Prince Carlo Maria Carafa, who on the space did not provide for public buildings. However, the Domus, a sign of the rising power of the Iuratoria Court, established a subordinate relationship to the adjacent Mother Church, built in the same period. After National Unity, it was decided to demolish the building and build a new one, designed by Carlo Sada, a projection of a modern city under going economic expansion and therefore to be equipped with new public services. If the eighteenth-century Domus Iuratoria stood as an element of caesura in the square, the new palace, defined itself, at the behest of the Municipal commission, as a hierarchically predominant element with respect to the Mother Church, rewriting the morphology of the space.

Abstract
If the eighteenth-century Domus Iuratoria stood as an element of caesura in the square, the new palace, defined itself, at the behest of the Municipal commission, as a hierarchically predominant element with respect to the Mother Church, rewriting the morphology of the space.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
