The essay analyses the current regulatory framework on gene editing at national and international levels, considering the impact of some recent advanced technologies, such as CRISPR-Cas9, on the genetic modification of germ cells. Contrary to somatic gene editing, genome editing applied to human embryos or gametes affects unborn individuals and their offspring, involving significant and largely unsolved ethical and legal issues. Against this backdrop, the study will explore, from a comparative law perspective, whether and to what extent basic research and clinical application of human germline editing should be allowed.

Abstract
The essay analyses the current regulatory framework on gene editing at national and international levels, considering the impact of some recent advanced technologies, such as CRISPR-Cas9, on the genetic modification of germ cells. Contrary to somatic gene editing, genome editing applied to human embryos or gametes affects unborn individuals and their offspring, involving significant and largely unsolved ethical and legal issues. Against this backdrop, the study will explore, from a comparative law perspective, whether and to what extent basic research and clinical application of human germline editing should be allowed.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
