The expression “Cancel Culture” refers to a variety of collective actions and behaviours aimed at blaming and boycotting public figures or works hitherto endowed with social prestige. The article does not intend to make value judgements on this controversial and culturally relevant phenomenon, but tries to provide a non-ideologised philosophical analysis of it. In order to do this, it addresses the issue of Cancel Culture by focusing on one of its most characteristic and pervasive features: its moralistic nature and the moralisation of public space and collective memory to which it aspires.

Abstract

The expression “Cancel Culture” refers to a variety of collective actions and behaviours aimed at blaming and boycotting public figures or works hitherto endowed with social prestige. The article does not intend to make value judgements on this controversial and culturally relevant phenomenon, but tries to provide a non-ideologised philosophical analysis of it. In order to do this, it addresses the issue of Cancel Culture by focusing on one of its most characteristic and pervasive features: its moralistic nature and the moralisation of public space and collective memory to which it aspires.
