This paper offers some reflections on the need to recall the historical and memorial value of two former psychiatric hospitals in Palermo: namely the Real Casa dei Matti and the Vignicella. Informed by different didactic experiences focussing on understanding, restoring, and presenting these buildings, in the framework of an architectural project, a more coherent evaluation is proposed in order to define new possible uses for these buildings, while also respecting their significance.

Abstract

This paper offers some reflections on the need to recall the historical and memorial value of two former psychiatric hospitals in Palermo: namely the Real Casa dei Matti and the Vignicella. Informed by different didactic experiences focussing on understanding, restoring, and presenting these buildings, in the framework of an architectural project, a more coherent evaluation is proposed in order to define new possible uses for these buildings, while also respecting their significance.
