While today one still very rarely finds mono or bilingual dictionaries authored by women, in the first half of the twentieth century three women published dictionaries in France and Italy, with varying degrees of success. Octavia Cesana (1912) published a phrase dictionary, while Faustina De Graziani (1916, 1958) and L. Marichy (reprinted several times from 1940 to 1962) brought out general pocket dictionaries. In all three cases, their relationship with language seems to be fixed within extremely conservative schemes that reveal a deliberate refusal to register or reflect contemporary linguistic and social changes.
