Per una riflessione sulla presenza di sculture e arti decorative in bronzo e ghisa negli spazi urbani tra XIX e primi decenni del XX secolo a Palermo

The contribution deals with some of Palermo's leading foundries in order to confirm the hypothesis put forward by the writer elsewhere, namely that the Florio family's celebrated Fonderia Oretea was not dedicated to the production of sculptural bronzes but exclusively to cast-iron residential and urban artistic furnishings. This is proposed as one of the reasons that gave rise to the founding of Fonderia Artistica Rutelli by sculptor Mario Rutelli, in fact the only artistic foundry in Palermo active since at least 1893, the date of the first bronze traced so far of that production and published here. The essay examines, therefore, some examples of Palermo street furniture of the second half of the 19th century, either disappeared or still extant, and highlights the excursus that, starting with the equestrian statue of Victor Emmanuel II in 1886 and continuing with other statues of a Risorgimento character, sees the spread of bronze statuary predominantly, as noted, in the main squares of the new city of bourgeois extraction.

Il contributo tratta di alcune tra le principali fonderie palermitane, per confermare l’ipotesi avanzata dallo scrivente in altra sede, ovvero che la celeberrima Fonderia Oretea della famiglia Florio non si dedicasse alla realizzazione di bronzi scultorei ma esclusivamente ad arredi artistici residenziali e urbani in ghisa. Questa si propone come una delle ragioni che dettero luogo alla fondazione della Fonderia Artistica Rutelli da parte dello scultore Mario Rutelli, nei fatti l’unica fonderia artistica a Palermo attiva almeno dal 1893, data del primo bronzo rintracciato finora di quella produzione e qui pubblicato. Il saggio prende in esame, dunque, alcuni esemplari di arredi urbani palermitani del secondo Ottocento, scomparsi o ancora esistenti, e pone in evidenza l’excursus che, a partire dalla statua equestre di Vittorio Emanuele II del 1886 e proseguendo anche con altre statue di carattere risorgimentale, vede il diffondersi della statuaria in bronzo prevalentemente, come osservato, nelle principali piazza della città nuova di estrazione borghese.
