In recent years, significant changes have been achieved in integrating retail payments, with rapid growth in the number of electronic and mobile payments, the emergence of new types of payment services and players in the market place. The continued development of FinTech – to which the retail payments market is particularly sensitive – involves new types of payment products and services or the improvement of existing ones and it has given space to the entrance of new players. At the same time, this phenomenon has led to a gradual erosion of the supremacy of banks in this market. This essay will explore, in this context, new confines of the relevant market of payment services and the different reaction of incumbents (especially banks) and of newcomers (e.g. Big-Tech). Incumbents are trying to maintain their domain position unchanged, while newcomers attempt to exploit their strengths, in order to grab ever greater market shares.

Abstract

In recent years, significant changes have been achieved in integrating retail payments, with rapid growth in the number of electronic and mobile payments, the emergence of new types of payment services and players in the market place.
