Passion, wisdom and malice impose themselves as the basic ingredients of female stage representation and mark a rather wide boundary including both tragic and comic protagonists. Women on stage shamelessly exercised their power in relation to the male universe, also owing to the blurring of the boundary between male and female roles, as the Plautine mulieres very effectively demonstrated. Fiction experimented on those tried and tested dramatic schemes, leading to a celebration of the true ‘triumph of female intelligence’ which laid bare – if only with laughter – the weaknesses of the ‘male’ perspective.

Abstract
Passion, wisdom and malice impose themselves as the basic ingredients of female stage representation and mark a rather wide boundary including both tragic and comic protagonists. Women on stage shamelessly exercised their power in relation to the male universe, also owing to the blurring of the boundary between male and female roles, as the Plautine mulieres very effectively demonstrated. Fiction experimented on those tried and tested dramatic schemes, leading to a celebration of the true ‘triumph of female intelligence’ which laid bare – if only with laughter – the weaknesses of the ‘male’ perspective.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
