The paper reflects on the status of abstract art through the critical examination of three key notions of contemporary aesthetic reflection: form, figure, and gesture. The image of the labyrinth is used as a privileged interpretative filter of the notions at play. In this way, an attempt is made to outline a semiotics of abstract arts attentive to a mythical archetype, the labyrinth, with immense heuristic potential.

Abstract

The paper reflects on the status of abstract art through the critical examination of three key notions of contemporary aesthetic reflection: form, figure, and gesture. The image of the labyrinth is used as a privileged interpretative filter of the notions at play. In this way, an attempt is made to outline a semiotics of abstract arts attentive to a mythical archetype, the labyrinth, with immense heuristic potential.
