Renewable hydrogen represents a promising technology, especially to meet climate goals and decarbonize several key sectors of the productive system. The number of possible applications is considerable, as it is its potential contribution to the climate goals. This technology is, however, still at an early stage, and so is the European Union (EU) legal framework that should uphold its development. This article tries to give an outlook on some key points of the applicable EU policy on hydrogen (especially renewable and low-carbon), as well as examine some specific Union legal frameworks that are applicable, and the critical issues that the current regime, still in its early stages, inevitably presents. The article also highlights the recent EU policy developments that, due to the actual geopolitical situation, are seemingly boosting up the European agenda on hydrogen.

Abstract
Renewable hydrogen represents a promising technology, especially to meet climate goals and decarbonize several key sectors of the productive system. The number of possible applications is considerable, as it is its potential contribution to the climate goals. This technology is, however, still at an early stage, and so is the European Union (EU) legal framework that should uphold its development. This article tries to give an outlook on some key points of the applicable EU policy on hydrogen (especially renewable and low-carbon), as well as examine some specific Union legal frameworks that are applicable, and the critical issues that the current regime, still in its early stages, inevitably presents. The article also highlights the recent EU policy developments that, due to the actual geopolitical situation, are seemingly boosting up the European agenda on hydrogen.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
