Mutazioni urbane. La nuova chiesa di San Girolamo a Bari

The project addresses the various cultural issues linked to the places of "eminence": the light, the baptistery, the hall, the "ambone", the bema, the altar, and the related connections. The new church of San Girolamo is conceived as a place of prayer and social gathering. This article observes, in a context full of design stimuli and objective evidence linked to the nature of what has already been built, the path of the faithful towards the altar, and the liturgical function to discover that the churchyard is the first "station". It is an urban square that maintains its aura of sacredness and seeks a necessary dialogue with the urban fabric, in this peripheral part of Bari. In this case study we tried to broaden our gaze on the theme of the limit, the border, the separation between the inside and the outside, underlining the peculiar characteristics and qualities of this contemporary architecture capable of modifying the spatial hierarchies in this liminal space.

Il progetto affronta le diverse questioni cultuali legate ai luoghi delle “eminenzialità”: la luce, il battistero, l’aula, l’ambone, il bema, l’altare e le relative connessioni. La nuova chiesa di San Girolamo è concepita come un luogo di preghiera e di aggregazione sociale. Questo articolo osserva, in un contesto pieno di stimoli progettuali e riscontri oggettivi legati alla natura del già costruito, il cammino del fedele verso l’altare e verso la funzione liturgica per scoprire che il sagrato è la prima “stazione”. È una piazza urbana che mantiene la sua aura di sacralità e cerca un dialogo necessario con il tessuto urbano, in questa parte periferica della città di Bari. In questo caso di studio si è cercato di allargare lo sguardo sul tema del limite, del confine, della separazione tra il dentro e il fuori, sottolineando le caratteristiche e le qualità peculiari di questa architettura contemporanea capace di modificare le gerarchie spaziali in questo spazio liminale.
