In the academic year 2020-2021, a pilot study was conducted on peer distance education, which was considered an effective tool to reduce the negative impact of distance education on students in the first year of the three-year degree programme in Education at the University of Palermo during the academic year 2019-2020, caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Nineteen students attending the second year of this programme, from March to June 2021, after participating in a specific training activity (15 hours), helped 35 fellow students to advance their careers by making up as many first-year exams as possible through remote tutoring. In July 2021, the group of 35 late students took 38 of the 57 total overdue exams: This meant that two-thirds of the overdue first-year exams were made up. By the end of the intervention, students had improved their understanding of the subjects taught by the 19 tutors. The tested model can be reused for peer-to-peer teaching due to its good results.
