Parenting skills are expressed through providing care and support during a child's life- cycle; fatherhood is built up through a caring approach that facilitates the mentalization of parental relationships. Detention in a psychiatric prison represents a particular condition that influences the parental dimension negatively, both as a consequence of separation and the progressive loss of parenting skills. We analysed parenting skills (AAPI-2 Bavolek, Keene 1999) and parenting representations (semi-structured interview) in 4 fathers interned in a psychiatric prison. Data allowed us to highlight low-medium scores on the AAPI-2 scale and a tendency to renunciation of the parental role: fatherhood is excluded or postponed until the termination of detention.
