The first part of this essay presents an overview of Walahfrid Strabo’s poetic production, with particular attention to his political and encomiastic compositions. The second part offers a strict analysis of two Walahfrid Strabo’s political and encomiastic poems, In adventu Hlotarii imperatoris (carm. 5, 63 Dümmler) and In adventu Caroli filii augustorum (carm. 5, 64 Dümmler). Both composed between 829 and 833, these two lyrics are respectively dedicated to the emperor Lotharius and to his young brother Charles the Bald, on the occasion of the transfer of the duchy of Alamannia from the first to the second. They are composed according to the same metric and strophic pattern and include the same number of verses; they are characterized by the same poetic, rhetorical and compositional elements, in particular, by an hymnological and liturgical dimension; finally, they are marked and distinguished by the same ideological vision of the imperial power, of the royalty, of the characters that belong to the family in power (a vision made of loyalty and devotion) and, at the same time, of the same function aimed at orienting and to convey the consensus of the clergy, the nobility, the plebs, of all social and popular orders towards the imperial recipients. During the essay, the rhetorical and stylistic elements of the two poems are also highlighted, as well as references to the classical and biblical-evangelical tradition.
5, 63 Dümmler) e «In adventu Caroli filii augustorum» (carm.
