I disegni e le illustrazioni per Il nome della rosa e per La misteriosa fiamma della Regina Loana di Umberto Eco

The aim of the paper is to explain some aspects of drawings and illustrations in Eco's novels. In particular, I will analyze those present in The Name of the Rose (1980) and The Mysterious Flame of Queen Loana (2004), which are considered crucial as the first and last instances in the author's iconotestual series. In the first novel, the two original drawings have been enriched in the recent reissue by the author's preparatory materials, juxtaposing in the same volume an authorial juxtaposition of verbal and visual, present since the original edition, and a series of reproductions of sketches with notes in the margin, which appeared as an editorial novelty in the volume's appendix. In the second case, on the other hand, the definition of illustrated novel, present since the title page, emphasizes the decisive role of the illustrations, their variety and their different functions in the volume, not only as necessary to form the archive of the individual and collective memory of the protagonist and the reader, but elaborated and composed by the author who therefore proves himself to be, writer and artist, at the same time. The comparison of the two cases will enable us to distinguish the drawings and illustrations reproduced in the novels, their nature, their relationship to each other and their narrative functions, but it will also enable us to illuminate some of the modes of the authorial principle in cases of Doppelbegabung.

L’obiettivo del contributo è di chiarire alcuni aspetti dei disegni e delle illustrazioni nei romanzi di Eco. In particolare, analizzerò quelli presenti ne Il nome della rosa (1980) e ne La misteriosa fiamma della Regina Loana (2004), considerati cruciali, in quanto primo e ultimo caso nella serie iconotestuale dell’autore. Nel primo romanzo i due disegni originari sono stati arricchiti, nella recente riedizione, dai materiali preparatori dell’autore, accostando nello stesso volume una giustapposizione autoriale di verbale e visivo, presente sin dalla edizione originaria, e una serie di riproduzioni di schizzi con appunti a margine, apparsi come novità editoriale nell’appendice del volume. Nel secondo caso, invece, la definizione di romanzo illustrato, presente sin dal frontespizio, mette l’accento sul ruolo decisivo delle illustrazioni, sulla loro varietà e sulle loro diverse funzioni nel volume, non soltanto in quanto necessarie a formare l’archivio della memoria individuale e collettiva del protagonista e del lettore, ma elaborate e composte dall’autore che pertanto si dimostra essere, scrittore e artista, al contempo. Il confronto tra i due casi permetterà di distinguere i disegni e le illustrazioni riprodotti nei romanzi, la loro natura, la loro relazione reciproca e le loro funzioni narrative, ma consentirà anche di illuminare alcune modalità del principio autoriale nei casi di Doppelbegabung.
