In Sicilian charms and spells, and in general in every eucological text under secrecy constraints, the nomina sacra, which usually indicate the names of thaumaturgical and soteric or pathogenic and harmful entities, have undergone processes of morphological re-determination and semantic re-functionalization over time. The metamorphosis has led to new forms that show a preference for deonomastic solutions deemed more familiar and aligned with the ideology dominant at the time when the change occurs. Even though the new occurrences are close to the phonetics and prosody of the original, received during the transmission ritual of the same, they may also change meaning and function, acquiring other roles and meanings.

Abstract
In Sicilian charms and spells, and in general in every eucological text under secrecy constraints, the nomina sacra, which usually indicate the names of thaumaturgical and soteric or pathogenic and harmful entities, have undergone processes of morphological re-determination and semantic re-functionalization over time. The metamorphosis has led to new forms that show a preference for deonomastic solutions deemed more familiar and aligned with the ideology dominant at the time when the change occurs. Even though the new occurrences are close to the phonetics and prosody of the original, received during the transmission ritual of the same, they may also change meaning and function, acquiring other roles and meanings.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
