The article is focused on the decretals addressed to recipients of the island of Sicily between the beginning of the Norman era (second half of the 11th century) and the end of the pontificate of Celestine III (1198). These decretals are transmitted within the canonical collections from Gratian’s Decretum to the Liber Extra. The analysis of this type of sources makes it possible to acknowledge the legal issues that were perceived as urgent and complex in the historical context, as well as to further investigate the character of the relations between the papacy and the ecclesiastical bodies of the island.
