Recognising and interpreting UNESCO WHL sites in Sicily

Sicily is an island that has been the centre and scene of a succession of dominations, many of which have left visible traces of their passage. It is possible to imagine every UNESCO site in Sicily as representative of some cultural stratifications, whose signs extend far beyond the perimeter defined by the criteria of protection. Sicilian heritage may then be seen as a metaphor to tell the different ways of building, the specific relationships with the territory and the construction of landscapes, and the of living that every culture established in these places. This paper proposes an analysis and interpretation of some recent architectures that - intervening on the heritage or referring to it - return to express and narrate the characters of the different Sicilian cultural landscapes.

La Sicilia è un’isola che è stata centro e teatro di un susseguirsi di dominazioni, molte delle quali hanno lasciato visibili tracce del loro trascorso. È possibile immaginare ogni sito UNESCO in Sicilia come rappresentativo di alcune stratificazioni culturali, i cui segni si estendono ben oltre le perimetrazioni definite dai criteri di tutela. Il patrimonio siciliano, allora, come metafora per raccontare differenti modi di costruire, le specifiche relazioni con il territorio e la costruzione di paesaggio, i caratteri dell’abitare che ogni cultura ha instaurato in questi luoghi. Il contributo propone l’analisi e l’interpretazione di alcune architetture recenti che – intervenendo sul patrimonio o facendo riferimento ad esso – tornano a esprimere e narrare i caratteri dei diversi paesaggi culturali siciliani.
