In the narrative framework of autofiction, Siri Hustvedt's Memories of the Future (2019), an older woman interrogates herself as a young woman, and from this interrogation four markedly distinct narratives unfold, thanks in part to obvious typographical cues. These are the first novel the narrator decided to write during her doctorate at Columbia University and a diary from the same period, found by chance, two stories that intertwined with the author's chats with her hospice mother and the narrator's philosophical and neuroscientific reflections. The four narratives thus interweave the elderly mother's memory difficulties, the removals of traumatic episodes in the narrator-protagonist's life, and the collective amnesia with respect to female figures, such as Baroness Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven, recently reevaluated for the discovery of her creative contribution to the famous Fontaine hitherto attributed to Duchamp. Beginning with philosophical and scientific reflections around a conception of memory as an active transformation of recollection, Hustvedt reckons with personal, familial and collective amnesia.

Abstract
Beginning with philosophical and scientific reflections around a conception of memory as an active transformation of recollection, Hustvedt reckons with personal, familial and collective amnesia.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
