During the reign of Ferdinand II, the government purchased from England the steam ships for the postal service and for the transport of passengers. Ves sels and steam engines were always imported from abroad and were almost always of English or French manufacturing. In 1840, to free the kingdom from foreign economic dependence, after the last purchase of 3 English ships, Ferdinand II commissioned Carlo Filangieri, Prince of Satriano, to identify the place where to set up a royal factory for the production of steam locomotives for navigation and for the nascent railway. Pietrarsa was chosen as place, near Portici and in the factory, already fully op erational in 1841, about 200 workers began to build naval and railway steam engines while, the Filangieri also provided for the creation of a school of ma chinist students who also always came recruited abroad. Pietrarsa’s factory transformed the Neapolitan area into an important indus trial center that was enriched with factories and shipyards specialized in an eco nomic and mechanical engineering activity among which the iron foundry “Zino& Henry” stood out for its size and number of workers. spare parts for tex tile machines soon passed to the complete production of machinery and the “Guppy & Co.”, founded in 1849 by the naval engineer Thomas Richard Guppy.

Durante il regno di Ferdinando II, il governo acquistava dall’Inghilterra le navi a vapore per il servizio postale e per il trasporto dei passeggeri. Le navi e le motrici a vapore venivano sempre importate dall’estero e quasi sempre erano di fattura inglese o francese. Nel 1840, per affrancare il regno dalla dipendenza economica straniera, dopo l’ultimo acquisto di 3 bastimenti inglesi, Ferdinando II incaricò Carlo Fi langieri, principe di Satriano, di individuare il luogo dove far sorgere una fab brica regia per la produzione di locomotive a vapore per la navigazione e per la nascente ferrovia. Il sito prescelto fu Pietrarsa, nei pressi di Portici e nello stabi limento, già pienamente operativo nel 1841, circa 200 lavoratori iniziarono a costruire motori a vapore navali e ferroviari mentre, il Filangieri provvedeva anche alla creazione di una scuola di alunni macchinisti che pure venivano sempre reclutati all’estero. L’officina di Pietrarsa trasformò l’area napoletana in un importante polo industriale che si arricchiva di opifici e cantieri specializzati in un indotto eco nomico della metalmeccanica tra i quali spiccavano per dimensione e numero di operai la fonderia di ferro “Zino & Henry” che dai ricambi per macchine tessili passò in breve alla produzione completa dei macchinari e la “Guppy& Co.”, fondata nel 1849 dall'ingegnere navale Thomas Richard Guppy.
