Vestirse y aparecer. la moda, instrumento de control y de poder en las élites del antiguo régimen, entre España y Sicilia a principios de la edad moderna

The financial vicissitudes of the Spanish Habsburgs have often received much attention in historiography. They, together with a series of fortunate historical circumstances and the careful matrimonial policy undertaken by the Iberian sovereigns, are to be considered the driving force behind the power policy pursued in Europe in those years; acquiring the role of major European power of the time, with almost global dimensions, nevertheless came at an important cost in economic terms. The approach adopted here, far from wanting to exhaust in a few lines the historiographical positions of the last half-century on the study of the power elites, a vast subject impossible to exhaust in a few lines, wants instead to highlight the narratives based on aristocratic protagonism, also drawing attention to the existence of certain intermediate groups that demanded, dynamically, the power of the nobility. intermediate groups that demanded new forms of political participation in the various European monarchies, and that this, in conjunction with other very heterogeneous elements, produced a changed representation and manifestation of taste.

Le vicissitudini finanziarie degli Asburgo di Spagna hanno riscosso spesso grande attenzione da parte della storiografia. Esse, insieme ad una serie di fortunate circostanze storiche e all’accurata politica matrimoniale intrapresa dai sovrani iberici, sono da considerarsi il motore della politica di potenza svolta in Europa in quegli anni; acquisire il ruolo di maggiore potenza europea dell’epoca, con dimensioni quasi globali, ebbe tuttavia un costo importante in termini economici. L’approccio qui adottato, lungi dal voler esaurire in poche righe le posizioni storiografiche dell’ultimo mezzo secolo relative allo studio delle élites di potere, tema assai vasto e impossibile da esaurire in poche righe, vuole invece mettere in evidenza le narrazioni basate sul protagonismo nobiliare, richiamando anche l’attenzione sull’esistenza di alcuni gruppi intermedi che esigevano, dinnanzi alle varie Monarchie europee, nuove forme di partecipazione politica, e che ciò, in concomitanza con altri elementi assai eterogenei, abbia prodotto una mutata rappresentazione e manifestazione del gusto.
