Innalzamento delle vocali medie toniche in contesto di /a/ finale in un’area della Sicilia centrale

Central Sicilian varieties are notoriously characterised by the presence of certain vowel phenomena (among them, metaphony and the lowering of stressed i/u in words with the same vowels in final position) and a rich literature focuses on them. The phenomenon more particularly examined in this essay, however, is almost unknown yet. It concerns the rising of the stressed middle vowels e/o when -a is in final position affecting a small and compact area in the province of Caltanissetta. Of course, it further complicates the picture of vowel dynamics in central Sicily. Some aspects of the dynamics concerning the relationship between stressed vowels and final vowels are evaluated, in this essay, on the basis of the data that emerged from measuring the frequencies (Hz) of the formants (F0, F1, F2) of the vowels of both varieties in the linguistic repertoire of Campofranco (CL). This, not in order to propose alternative hypotheses, on a theoretical level, but just to highlight some aspects that seem to suggest further reflections and other targeted investigations into the vocalism of both Sicilian and Italian not only of the small area reported in this essay.

Le varietà della Sicilia centrale sono notoriamente caratterizzate dalla presenza di alcuni fenomeni vocalici (tra questi, la metafonia e l’abbassamento di i/u toniche in parole che presentano le stesse vocali in posizione finale), sui quali esiste ormai un’ampia letteratura. Quasi ignoto è, invece, il fenomeno più particolarmente preso in esame in questo saggio: l'innalzamento delle vocali medie toniche e/o in contesto di a finale che interessa una piccola e compatta area della provincia di Caltanissetta e che interviene a complicare ulteriormente il quadro delle dinamiche vocaliche nella Sicilia centrale. Sulla base dei dati emersi dalla misurazione delle frequenze in Hz delle formanti (F0, F1, F2) delle vocali di entrambe le varietà del repertorio linguistico di Campofranco (CL), si valutano, in questo saggio, alcuni aspetti delle dinamiche riguardanti la relazione tra vocali toniche e vocali finali. Ciò, non per proporre ipotesi alternative, sul piano teorico, a quelle finora espresse, ma più semplicemente per evidenziare alcuni aspetti che sembrano suggerire ulteriori riflessioni e altre mirate indagini sul vocalismo sia del siciliano che dell’italiano non soltanto della piccola area segnalata in questo saggio.
