Travel literature, from the point of view of Cultural Geography, can be an opportunity to study dynamics concerning the symbolic (re)production used to depict and represent key-concepts such as space, landscapes and human interactions. The present work, using as references some crucial extracts from In America (1897) by De Amicis and A ronda das Américas (Around the Americas-2001) by Amado, aims at studying from a cultural-geographic and semiotic point of view, the various ways in which physical and symbolic spaces are described – including «frontiers» – and how social life and human interactions are narrated by the above mentioned authors. The comparison between these two works is not only an analysis based on differences and similarities, culturally and diachronically, but rather a study focusing on De Amicis and Amado’s textualizations. Not only do their texts reflect a point of view filtered by each author’s cultural and geographic background but this bias approach often results in totally different, if not complementary ways of viewing America.

Abstract
Not only do their texts reflect a point of view filtered by each author’s cultural and geographic background but this bias approach often results in totally different, if not complementary ways of viewing America.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
