The introduction to the volume: Fire and coal. The traditions of the charcoal burners underlines a careful investigation into the work of the Sardinian charcoal burners, the phases of charcoal production, the influence that the Tuscan workers had in the transfer of skills and abilities on the local charcoal burners, the man-plant world relationship which found maximum expression in the "process of personification" of the charcoal pile with the attribution of names and appellations. The study also investigates the first evidence of the use of fire by men and the ergological and social uses that fire has assumed over time, its symbolic and linguistic dimension, the heterogeneous universe of practices and beliefs linked to igneous sphere, the cults and rituals that provide for the lighting of bonfires with sacred connotations, still constitutive of the ceremonial calendars of the island communities.

L'introduzione al volume: Fuoco e carbone. Le tradizioni dei carbonai sottolinea un’accorta indagine sul lavoro dei carbonai sardi, sulle fasi di produzione del carbone, sull’influenza che hanno avuto le maestranze toscane nel trasferimento di competenze e abilità sui carbonai locali, sul rapporto uomo-mondo vegetale che trovava massima espressione nel “processo di personificazione” della carbonaia con l’attribuzione di nomi e appellativi. Lo studio indaga, inoltre, le prime attestazioni di utilizzo del fuoco da parte degli uomini e gli impieghi ergologici e sociali che proprio il fuoco ha assunto nel tempo, la sua dimensione simbolica, quella linguistica, l’universo eterogeneo di pratiche e credenze legate alla sfera ignea, i culti e le ritualità che prevedono l’accensione di falò sacralmente connotati, ancora costitutivi dei calendari cerimoniali delle comunità isolane.
