Eco e la serialità. Appunti di lettura a mo' di introduzione

Semiotic studies have worked a lot on serial narratives, trying to reconstruct their form starting from discursive genres and different types of language - from literature to comics, from chivalrous epics to puppet theatre, from photo novels to cinema and, obviously, to television – and following the numerous internal transformations that have manifested themselves in the course of the media reports. Today, then, that the media do nothing but refer to each other, interweaving and enriching each other, the question of seriality – once considered the prerogative of mass culture and the midcult that derived from it – has become one with that of transmediality, increasingly involving the structural and comparative gaze of semiotics.

Gli studi semiotici hanno lavorato parecchio sulle narrazioni seriali, cercando di ricostruirne la forma a partire da generi discorsivi e tipi di linguaggio differenti – dalla letteratura al fumetto, dall’epica cavalleresca al teatro delle marionette, dal fotoromanzo al cinema sino, ovviamente, alla televisione – e seguendone le numerose trasformazioni interne che si sono manifestate nel corso delle cronache mediatiche. Oggi, poi, che i media non fanno altro che rinviarsi a vicenda, intrecciandosi e arricchendosi fra loro, la questione della serialità – un tempo considerata appannaggio della cultura di massa e del midcult che ne derivava – è divenuta tutt’uno con quella della transmedialità, coinvolgendo sempre di più lo sguardo strutturale e comparativo della semiotica.
