Francesco Gonzaga, born Annibale (1546-1620), arrived in Sicily "already loaded with prestige" (Brunelli). He was nephew of Cardinal Ercole and Don Ferrante (his tutors) and brother of Cardinal Scipione, and he was educated at the court of Mantua and at the court of Philip II in Flanders and Spain (together with Alessandro Farnese). After having served as Minister General of the Observant Franciscans, in 1587 he was elected, by royal appointment, Bishop of Cefalù. Zealous and rigorous "reformer", admirer of Carlo Borromeo and in relationship with the latter, he started an intense activity of reform of the diocese. Among the initiatives promoted and investigated starting from the sources, from the documentation and from what is partly published (there is not an organic and overall study): the foundation of the Seminary (1590) (which occupied the premises of a house), the transformations of the cathedral (1588-92) "to reduce it to the Roman" (Donesmondi) and became "model" for the cathedral churches of the same diocese, the restructuring of the bishop's palace where he resided permanently, the institution of the convent of S. Nicola of the Friars Minor; he also provided precise indications for interventions of renewal of the diocesan churches. Unfortunately, little or nothing remains of the prelate's work and activity of artistic and architectural promotion.
