Luigi Natoli, i Beati Paoli, la mafia

The Beati Paoli by Luigi Natoli, a novel published between 1909 and 1910, has always influenced the imagination of the Mafia, so that it has been written that «if the Mafia has an ideology, then the myth of the Beati Paoli is undoubtedly one of its cornerstones». The novel’s great success immediately renewed the myth of the secret sect and contributed supporting the hypothesis according to which the benevolence with which Natoli narrated the deeds of the dark association, making heroes of its participants and renewing models and structures of the popular novel «à la Dumas», implicitly referred to the Mafia or alluded to a more generic Mafia feeling. However, the possible ideological readings of the novel, as well as its political implications, are more complex, as we try to attest in this essay.

I Beati Paoli di Luigi Natoli, romanzo popolare pubblicato a puntate tra il 1909 e il 1910, è un libro che ha da sempre suggestionato l’immaginario mafioso, tanto che è stato scritto che «se la mafia ha un’ideologia, allora il mito dei Beati Paoli ne è senz’altro uno dei cardini». Il grande successo che ebbe immediatamente il racconto, infatti, rinnovò il mito della setta segreta e concorse a suffragare l’ipotesi secondo cui la benevolenza con la quale lo scrittore palermitano narrava le gesta del tenebroso sodalizio, e rinnovando modelli e strutture del romanzo popolare “alla Dumas”, si riferisse implicitamente alla mafia o comunque alludesse a un più generico sentire mafioso. Tuttavia, le possibili letture ideologiche del romanzo, nonché le sue implicazioni politiche, sono più complesse, come si prova ad attestare in questo saggio.
