La Cappella Reale di Palermo all’incrocio tra fede e potere. Musica, cerimonia e musicisti durante il viceregno spagnolo (secc. XVII-XVIII)

This paper focuses on the relationship between music and power through one of the most important institutions of the Spanish Viceroyalty in the Italian peninsula, the Royal Chapel of St. Peter, commonly known as the Cappella Palatina. The participation in 17th and 18th century great state ceremonies, especially funerals and auto-da-fé, points out the role of the musicians of the Palatina in consolidating the image of the viceroy, as well as the royal identity in a geographically distant context. Recent studies have also confirmed that in the ecclesiastical institutions it was mainly the musicians of the Royal Chapel who were hired to play and sing. Therefore, a more careful reconstruction of Palatina’s musical activities would be worth, while not only in itself, but especially in relation to a larger understanding of music in Palermo, serving to identify the collaborations with convents and monasteries of the urban territory.

Il contributo intende considerare il rapporto tra musica e potere attraverso una delle più importanti istituzioni del vicereame spagnolo nella penisola italiana, la Cappella Reale di San Pietro, comunemente nota come Cappella Palatina. La partecipazione alle grandi cerimonie di stato di Sei e Settecento, in particolare funerali e autodafé, sottolinea il ruolo dei musicisti della Palatina nel consolidare l’immagine del viceré e dell’identità regia in un contesto geograficamente lontano. Studi recenti hanno peraltro confermato che nelle istituzioni ecclesiastiche erano proprio gli esecutori della Cappella Reale a essere ingaggiati per suonare e cantare. Una più attenta ricostruzione dell’attività musicale della Palatina varrebbe dunque non soltanto di per sé, ma soprattutto in relazione a una più ampia comprensione della musica a Palermo, al fine di individuare le collaborazioni con conventi e monasteri del territorio urbano.
