The contribution investigates the Vergian production in prose (novels and novels) included in the years preceding the so-called verist turning point (1872-1876). The trilogy of Milanese novels (Eva, Tigre reale, Eros) and some novels of Primavera and other stories, in fact, show the Sicilian writer struggling with an original subject, linked as it is to the environments of Florentine worldliness, (artists, painters with successful ambitions, dancers) frequented by the same author, and amorous passions intended, mostly, to succumb under the weight of the law of profit. As many scholars have pointed out, the interest for the pre-verist literary season lies both in the technical solutions adopted by the writer (free indirect speech) to bring out the opposing visions of reality both on the level of content. The themes, in fact, reveal the ability to observe at a distance the eye narrating, which sees the effects of economic progress on the private sphere of feelings, on the social and intimate relations between man and woman and on the living conditions of the artist in the newly formed Italian nation. The result is an interesting laboratory of literary investigation and narrative experimentation that preludes to the next verista season.
