Observing and analyzing the recent political, economic and social changes that the Arab and Islamic world are going through, albeit with varying intensity, it is not possible not to underline how much contemporary phenomenologies, political as well as social, linked to Islamism are crucial in determining the future of North Africa as well as the Near and Middle Orient. Far from being relegated to the background, these phenomenologies assert themselves on the international media scene, becoming an object of interest both for scholars and academics as well as, above all, for the general public which finds itself having to handle, without really being too familiar with terms such as Salafism and jihadism. It is not our intention to point here to an accurate and in-depth examination of realities such as IS (or ISIS, or ISIL, or more correctly in Arabic Daish or Daesh depending on the transliterations to be used), but rather intends to propose a diachronic perspective to reach a more complex understanding of the articulated nature of these phenomenologies. I'll try to be clearer. If today Daesh yes refers to an ideal of caliphate to be restored in the Levantine region, if it invokes the jihad against the West and if the theory of clash of civilizations proposed by Samuel Huntington is reported today to our attention, well it will therefore be worthwhile to take a step back and analyze, historically, a limited portion of history that is in any case linked to these events. To analyze the one that the prof. Massimo Campanini defined the retrospective utopia that a part of the Islamist movements of our time is customary to make their own, it is necessary to investigate the roots in which this utopia sinks its presumption of being.

Osservando ed analizzando i recenti mutamenti politici, economici nonché sociali che stanno attraversando, seppur con intensità variabile, il mondo arabo ed islamico, non è possibile non sottolineare quanto le contemporanee fenomenologie, politiche quanto sociali, legate all’islamismo siano determinanti nel determinare il futuro del Nord Africa come anche del Vicino e Medio oriente. Lungi dall’essere relegate in secondo piano, tali fenomenologie si affermano sullo scenario mediatico internazionale divenendo oggetto di interesse tanto per studiosi ed accademici quanto, soprattutto, per l’opinione pubblica generale la quale si trova a dover maneggiare, senza averne invero troppa familiarità, termini come salafismo e jihadismo. Non è qui nostra intenzione puntare ad una disamina accurata ed approfondita di realtà come IS (o ISIS, o ISIL, o più correttamente in arabo Daish o Daesh a seconda delle traslitterazioni che si vogliano utilizzare), quanto piuttosto si intende proporre una prospettiva diacronica per giungere ad una più complessa comprensione dell’articolata natura di tali fenomenologie. Cercherò di essere più chiaro. Se oggi Daesh si richiama ad un’ideale di califfato da restaurare nella regione levantina, se invoca il jihad contro l’occidente e se la teoria di scontro delle civiltà proposta da Samuel Huntington viene riportata oggi alla nostra attenzione, ebbene varrà dunque la pena di fare un passo indietro ed analizzare, storicamente, una pur limitata porzione di storia che a tali eventi è comunque legata. Per analizzare quella che il prof. Massimo Campanini ha definito l’utopia retrospettiva che una parte dei movimenti islamisti a noi contemporanei è d’uso far propria, occorre necessariamente indagare le radici in cui tale utopia affonda la propria presunzione d’essere.
