Abstract

Analysing a few participatory art projects (Alÿs; González-Torres; Tiravanija; Studio Azzurro) that focus on the concepts of gift and celebration, the essay aims to demonstrate how the relationship among individuals can be the basis for a political aesthetics. The term 'politics' is to be understood, with reference to Plato and Aristotle, as mutual cooperation in the space of polis (city), while the term aesthetics refers to the idea of aisthesis, i.e. a theory of sensitivity. In this theoretical perspective, the arts focusing on gift and celebration activate relational strategies and, in doing so, develop a sensitivity that through care and attention for others becomes the pivot of community making.
