This article highlights the characteristics of rural poverty in Sub-Saharan Africa in general, and particularly in the Lekie Division in Cameroon. Its interest lies in the fact that to better combat poverty, it is first necessary to understand its true nature and its particular characteristics in the territory of intervention. Therefore, this study aims to offer the scientific community as well as various stakeholders a reference framework for the definition of effective economic policies against poverty in the territory of Lekie Division in Cameroon. The survey carried out on that territory found, through a descriptive analysis, that populations of Lekie suffer more from deficiencies in terms of education, health and nutrition; and those who are most affected by poverty are women (less educated than men), single-component families (generally made up of the elderly), single persons and widowed. Furthermore, poverty in Lekie Division is particularly due to the low productivity of the entrepreneurial activities of populations, especially the agricultural one, whose incomes are insufficient to cover their vital needs. Therefore, an effective economic policy against poverty in the territory of Lekie, to be effective, should focus more on strengthening human capital, which is an important factor of production.
