L'ex convento e carcere di San Vito di Agrigento. Studi e proposte per la sua conservazione

The essay “The former prison convent of San Vito in Agrigento. Studies on transformations and proposals for its conservation ”investigates the ancient convent of the Friars Minor of Agrigento, transformed in the century. XIX in the prison of Agrigento. The convent, built outside the city walls, consisted of the church, the cloister and the convent with the cells and common areas of the friars. The new destination as a prison, with the works carried out between the middle of the century. XIX, first and half of the century. XX, partially destroyed and concealed the medieval convent. In the Academic Year 2011-2012, the two courses of Laboratory of Restoration and Theory and History of Restauration, of the Degree Course ub Architecture, based in Agrigento, of the former Faculty of Architecture of Palermo, today Departiment of Architecure of the University of Palermo, have chosen the former Convent Prison of San Vito as a building to be investigated by the students, to draw up a restoration project and for its compatible reuse. The didactic activity was an opportunity to experiment with a concrete method for the restoration of a monument, and to suggest new functions useful for the community, and also useful for delivering the monument to future generations.

Il saggio “L’ex convento carcere di San Vito di Agrigento. Studi sulle trasformazioni e proposte per la sua conservazione” indaga l’antico convento dei frati Minori di Agrigento, trasformato nel sec. XIX in carcere di Agrigento. Il convento, costruito fuori le mura della città, era costituito dalla chiesa, dal chiostro e dal convento con le celle e gli spazi comuni dei frati. La nuova destinazione a carcere, con i lavori effettuati tra la metà del sec. XIX, primi e metà del sec. XX, ha in parte distrutto e occultato il convento medievale. Nell’Anno Accademico 2011-2012, i due corsi di Laboratorio di Restauro e Teoria e Storia del Restauro, del Corso di laurea in Architettura, sede di Agrigento, dell’ex Facoltà di Architettura di Palermo, oggi Dipartimento di Architettura, dell’Università degli Studi di Palermo, hanno scelto l’ex Convento Carcere di San Vito quale edificio da indagare da parte degli allievi, per redigere un progetto di restauro e per il suo riuso compatibile. L’attività didattica è stata l’occasione per sperimentare una concreta metodica per il restauro di un monumento, e suggerire nuove funzioni utili alla collettività, e utili pure per consegnare il monumento alle generazioni future.
