The Christmas choir "Vom Himmel hoch da komm ich her" was made by Martin Luther based on the popular melody "Ich komm aus fremden Landen her" and was published for the first time in Wittenberg in 1535. Widely spread throughout the German cultural area, this passage was taken up, among others, also by JS Bach, both in the "Weinachts-Oratorium" BWV 248 and in the "Canonische Veraenderungen" for organ BWV 796 and 796a. The essay reconstructs the context in which the original version of the Christmas carol came to light and focuses on Bach's interest in numerology and the "hidden quotations" in many of his works, including the "Veraenderungen" on Luther's choral. The final part of the essay is dedicated to the version for choir and orchestra of the Bachian opera created by Igor Stravinsky in 1956 and therefore, in a more general sense, to the relations of the Russian composer with Anton Webern's counterpoint, serialism and music.
