In recent years, the word “border” has been used in different contexts: geo- political, economic, cultural, territorial, social. One of man’s first activities was to draw boundaries to define the relationship between the ego and the other, to establish the space of action. The border has not only served this purpose. Borders contribute to construct concepts, to generate reality, to shape the world. Therefore, studying the boundaries is quite complex in the first place for the different disciplines, approaches and analysis. Particular attention was paid to geographical boundaries as markers of the territories of the States, but the border is a symbolic and mental separator, but also a tool to build identity. Meaning of the border has changed over time. For Simmel, the border is the result of social dynamics that produce social reality. It is therefore a category that opens up to different worlds and possible applications. The paper will aim to analyze the concept of the border to offer subsequent points of reflection, not wanting to be exhaustive and referring to the specific literature on the subject. The reading and analysis of the border will be proposed as a possible epistemological perspective to read reality.
