One of keys to understand the value of the landscape as an identity reference is that of the role that plays the memory of a place that has 'belonged' to the individual who abandoned it, reinforcing in memory, the link with it. This process of memorial reworking of the landscape is often at the centre of the narrative creations of the so-called migration writings. If at the time of our great emigration, many Italians seemed to have integrated themselves well into the society of the host country, on the other hand, some of them perceived the new reality in a very different way that clashed with the difficulties of integration, with an exasperated defence of Italianity, and with the feeling of considering themselves as simple 'guests' within the new community. This difficulty in integration emerges often with particular emphasis from the narrative texts of emigrated writers as it happens, among others, in Antonio dal Masetto's Las novelas de Agata. In the return journey represented in this work, the landscape is the functional key for the search for a lost self; for the recognition of a present built from the past; for the meaning of 'empty' spaces suspended from memory, for the silent revenge of a men who, fulfilling the unfulfilled desire of the mother to return home, lives and relives a double resentment: that of built an inheritance, founded on the failure of the price paid for that elsewhere in which they believed to be able to find serenity and another towards that homeland that had expelled them, which has transformed, now, in a symbolic debtor.

Una delle possibili chiavi di lettura per comprendere il valore del paesaggio come riferimento identitario è quella del ruolo che interpreta la memoria di un luogo che è ‘appartenuto’ all’individuo che lo abbandonato, rafforzando, nel ricordo, il legame con esso. Questo processo di rielaborazione memoriale del paesaggio è spesso al centro delle creazioni narrative delle cosiddette scritture della migrazione. Se da un lato, al tempo della nostra grande emigrazione, molti Italiani sembravano essersi ben inseriti all’interno della società del paese di accoglienza, dall’altro alcuni percepivano la nuova realtà in un modo ben diverso che si scontrava con le difficoltà dell’integrazione, con una esasperata difesa dell’italianità e con il considerarsi sempre come semplici ‘ospiti’ all’interno della nuova comunità. Una difficoltà all’integrazione che affiora spesso con particolare enfasi dai testi narrativi degli scrittori emigrati come accade, fra gli altri ne Las novelas de Agata di Antonio dal Masetto. Nel viaggio di ritorno rappresentato in quest’opera, il paesaggio è la chiave funzionale della ricerca di un io perduto, del riconoscimento di un presente costruito dal passato; della costruzione del significato degli spazi ‘vuoti’ sospesi dalla memoria, della silenziosa rivincita di chi, esaudendo il desiderio non realizzato dalla madre del ritorno in patria, vive e rivive un duplice risentimento: da una parte quello, costruito non solo in modo personale ma anche su un’eredità, fondato sul fallimento del prezzo pagato per quell’altrove in cui si era creduto di poter trovare serenità e benessere e, dall’altra, quello rivolto nei confronti di quella patria che li aveva espulsi, che si è trasformata, ora, in un debitore simbolico.
