PARADIGMI DEL TIRANNO DA TORQUATO TASSO A VITTORIO ALFIERI

The tyrant and tyrannical paradigm runs through the centuries, from Antiquity to the present day, an articulated path marked by breaks and changes of meaning. The analysis of three very different works in terms of genre and stylistic language, such as Il Costantino di Tasso, a speculative dialogue on the virtues of the Prince in sexteenth century, the Aristodemus of Carlo de’ Dottori, a seventeenth-century tragedy, which by force of the scenic language he hypostatizes the tragic figure of the tyrant and, finally, the Alfieri treaty, Della Tirannide, resentful pamphlet against the despotism and the disappearance of Freedom, allows us to follow the parable of a reflection which, between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, was at the center of some works by writers interested in defining the characteristics of the relationship between tyrant and subject, of space and the forms in which it is expressed. The investigation shows that in the Ancien régime the power of the tyrant uses the devices of theater and entertainment, such as the ostentation of the body and the exhibited forms of its power relation with the subjects - festivals, rituals and city processions, the pomp of the court - and that therefore there is a close interdependence between languages and forms of power.

Il paradigma del tiranno e della tirannide attraversa lungo i secoli, dall’Antichità ai giorni nostri, un articolato cammino segnato da rotture e modificazioni di senso. L’analisi di tre opere molto diverse tra loro per genere e linguaggio stilistico, quali Il Costantino di Tasso, dialogo speculativo sulle virtù del Principe nell’età della Controriforma, l’Aristodemo di Carlo de’ Dottori, tragedia secentesca, che con la forza del linguaggio scenico ipostatizza la figura tragica del tiranno e, infine, il trattato alfieriano, Della Tirannide, risentita polemica contro il dispotismo del tempo e la scomparsa della libertà, consente di seguire la parabola di una riflessione che, tra Cinquecento e Settecento, è stata al centro di alcune opere di scrittori interessati a definire i caratteri della relazione tra tiranno e suddito, dello spazio e delle forme in cui essa si esplica. L’indagine mostra che nell’Ancien régime il potere del tiranno si serve dei dispositivi proprî del teatro e dello spettacolo, quali l’ostentazione del corpo e le forme esibite della sua relazione di potere con i sudditi – feste, riti e processioni cittadine, il fasto della corte – e che pertanto esiste una stretta interdipendenza tra linguaggi e forme del potere
