Goethe e Ruskin e la conservazione dei monumenti e del paesaggio in Sicilia

Italy for Johann W. Goethe and J. Ruskin represented the country of cultural education and human growth. For both of them the knowledge of the Italian territory took place, before the direct experience with their dreamed journeys, through the pages of numerous volumes. The essay investigates the contribution offered by the poet and scientist of Frankfurt and by the English artist and art critic of the restoration, through the reading of travel reports, their reflections and comparisons, on the theme of conservation of monuments and landscape in Sicily. For Goethe the contemplation of the landscape and the preservation of monuments brought serenity and happiness to men. Almost one hundred years after Goethe, Ruskin remembered that landscape and architecture were bearers of moral values, and in the signs of time, rain and sun, there was life and the mysterious charm of beauty. The search for beauty, embodied in monuments and landscapes, to preserve in authenticity has represented the fundamental mission of their life; mission that they transmitted to our generation and those who will follow us.

L'Italia per Johann W. Goethe e J. Ruskin rappresentava il paese dell'educazione culturale e della crescita umana. Per entrambi la conoscenza del territorio italiano ha avuto luogo, prima dell'esperienza diretta con i loro viaggi sognati, attraverso le pagine di numerosi volumi. Il saggio indaga sul contributo offerto dal poeta e scienziato di Francoforte e dall'artista e critico d'arte inglese del restauro, attraverso la lettura di relazioni di viaggio, le loro riflessioni e confronti, sul tema della conservazione dei monumenti e del paesaggio in Sicilia. Per Goethe la contemplazione del paesaggio e la conservazione dei monumenti hanno portato serenità e felicità agli uomini. Quasi cento anni dopo Goethe, Ruskin ricordava che il paesaggio e l'architettura erano portatori di valori morali, e nei segni del tempo, della pioggia e del sole, c'era la vita e il misterioso fascino della bellezza. La ricerca della bellezza, incarnata in monumenti e paesaggi, da preservare nell'autenticità ha rappresentato la missione fondamentale della loro vita; missione che hanno trasmesso alla nostra generazione e a coloro che ci seguiranno.
