Te philosophy of irony has had, since its romantic origins, no good reputation because of its methodological and logical inconclusiveness and its contamination with literature. Whether we talk about Friedrich Schlegel or Paul de Man, about Søren Kierkegaard or Friedrich Nietzsche, Richard Rorty or Peter Sloterdijk, the “ironists” are hated because of their ability to say, even on the verge of death: “however”. Te charge that philosophy makes against ironists is based on three “suspicions”: 1) that they are not philosophically consistent and, therefore, that they, ultimately, do not know how to ironize themselves; 2) that their irony is only a disguised “egology”, as Hegel would claim and assumes literary forms, if nothing else because the ironists use an autobiographical form; 3) fnally that they are vitiated by a sort of anthropological “lack of commitment”, or – as Rorty would say – a “lack of solidarity”, and, therefore, they are quite often inefective and even harmful from a social and political point of view. In the following pages I will try to dissolve these “suspicions” through a close and “ironic” reading of two texts that belong to this tradition of cultural (not only literary) analysis, telling the story of an elective afnity between two emblematic thinkers: Friedrich Schlegel and Paul de Man.

Uno strano destino ha voluto che l’ultima frase scritta da Friedrich Schlegel la sera prima della morte, l’11 gennaio 1829, fosse una sorta di epitome di tutta la sua esistenza e di tutta la sua filosofia: «Das ganz vollendete und vollkommne Verstehen selbst aber [...]»1 che si potrebbe tradurre: «La compiuta e perfetta comprensione in quanto tale tuttavia [...]». Poco importa se l’emblema che chiude l’opera ci ricorda che questa “perfetta e compiuta” conoscenza è affidata, per l’ormai cattolico Schlegel, a Dio, cui l’anima si rivolge dopo aver spezzato le catene della mondanità. Per tutta la vita Schlegel aveva comunque creduto che il concetto di una “perfetta e compiuta” conoscenza fosse determinato da quel “tuttavia” (“aber”) che simbolicamente chiude la sua esperienza terrena. In quel “tuttavia” è rac- chiusa tutta la sua filosofia dell’incomprensibilità e dell’ironia, così come essa si è delineata sin dai primi studi filologici e dai primi frammenti critici.
